一、煩惱魔者，即是三毒、九十八使、取、有、流、扼、縛、蓋、纏、惱、結等，皆能破壞修道之事，如《摩訶衍論》偈說：
First, the māra of afflictions: this refers to the three poisons, the ninety-eight underlying tendencies, grasping, becoming, outflows, yokes, fetters, hindrances, entanglements, vexations, and bonds, all of which can ruin the practice of the Path. As a verse in the Mahāyāna Treatise states:
