Second, explaining the meaning of the factors: the second dhyāna has four factors: first, internal purity; second, prīti; third, sukha; fourth, ekāgratā. Now, in explaining the meaning of the factors, there are generally general and specific [aspects]. The meaning of 'supporting' and 'separating' factors is analogous to what was explained before. First, as for what is called the factor of internal purity: having detached from vitarka and vicāra, the samādhi manifests relying on the internally pure mind, luminous, distinct, and without defilement, and is therefore called the factor of internal purity. Second, as for the factor of prīti: samādhi manifests together with prīti; the practitioner deeply rejoices in himself, and because wholesome dharmas such as the ten kinds of merits of prīti and samādhi arise in the inner mind, he is immeasurably delighted, and it is therefore called the factor of prīti. Third, as for the factor of sukha: the practitioner experiences the sukha within prīti, tranquil and delighted, continuously sweet and pleasant, and it is therefore called the factor of sukha. Fourth, as for the factor of ekāgratā: the mind experiencing sukha subsides, neither taking the prīti and sukha within the samādhi as an object nor taking external thoughts and concepts as an object; the single mind is unmoving, and it is therefore called the factor of ekāgratā.
