5.139

第一、釋三禪名者，行者於第三心中得五種支林功德定中之善法，故名三禪也。若依《地持論》，名為樂俱禪，此定功德眷屬與遍身樂俱發故，猶是無覺無觀三昧聖默然定之所攝，但名通。於前二禪中已受名，今不重釋。

First, explaining the name of the third dhyāna: in the third mind, the practitioner attains the wholesome dharmas within the samādhi endowed with the merits of the five branches and factors, and therefore it is named the third dhyāna. If relying on the *Bodhisattvabhūmi*, it is named 'samādhi accompanied by sukha', because the merits and retinue of this samādhi manifest together with pervasive bodily sukha; it is still subsumed under the noble silent samādhi without vitarka and without vicāra, but the name is shared in common. Having already received the name in the preceding second dhyāna, it is not re-explained now.
