5.142

第一、明三禪發相者，加功不止，一心修習，其心湛然安靜，爾時樂定未發，而不加功力，心自澄靜，即是三禪未到地。於後其心泯然入定，不依內外，與樂俱發。當樂發時，亦有功德眷屬，具如前辨，但無動勇之喜為異，而綿綿之樂從內心而發，心樂美妙，不可為喻。

First, explaining the signs of the manifestation of the third dhyāna: applying effort without ceasing, cultivating with a single mind, his mind is calm and peaceful; at that time the sukha-samādhi has not yet manifested, but without applying extra effort, the mind is naturally clear and quiet, which is the anāgamya of the third dhyāna. Later, his mind tranquilly enters samādhi, relying neither on the internal nor the external, manifesting together with sukha. When sukha manifests, it also possesses the merits and retinues completely as analyzed before, differing only in lacking the surging and stirring prīti, while continuous sukha arises from the inner mind; the exquisite beauty of this mental joy cannot be expressed by analogy.
