How are factors established in terms of expedient means? 1. Ideation: when cultivating the space absorption, ideating the body as like a sieve or a steaming pot. 2. Guarding: this is the factor of equanimity, letting go of the three kinds of marks of form; furthermore, guarding means to protect and maintain, blocking the three kinds of form so that they do not break the mind of space. 3. Correctness: non-crookedness is its meaning; now, cultivating the space absorption is correctness, while attending to marks of form is crookedness. 4. Contemplation: contemplating to reach correct mindfulness, breaking through the three kinds of form to reach the principle of space. If the contemplating mind dwells in empty space without scattering, it is called the factor of ekāgratā. In the general explanation of 'factors', the meaning is branching off; because these five dharmas branch off and are not one, they are called factors.
