Second, the method of cultivation has two parts: 1. reviling the sphere of space and praising the sphere of consciousness; 2. contemplating to break through the sphere of space and binding the condition to attend to the sphere of consciousness. What is meant by reviling the space absorption? The practitioner knows that the space absorption accords with space. Empty space is boundless; when the mind conditions upon empty space, conditioning upon much causes scattering, which can destroy absorption. Furthermore, empty space is an external dharma; entering absorption by conditioning upon an external dharma, the absorption arises from the outside, which entails insecurity and many faults—this is called reviling the space absorption. Since the sphere of consciousness is an internal dharma, entering absorption by conditioning upon an internal dharma entails great stillness and security; therefore, one praises the sphere of consciousness. Second, contemplating to break through the sphere of space: one contemplates sensation, ideation, volition, and consciousness conditioned upon space as like an illness, like an ulcer, like a boil, like a dart; as impermanent, suffering, empty, and non-self; as existing through assembly, deceitful and unreal. These are the contemplations of the eight noble lineages. The first four are counteractive methods, which constitute contemplation of phenomena; the latter four, impermanence and so forth, are contemplation conditioning upon the truth and principle.
