Furthermore, if apart from the mind there were the eight characteristics, and apart from the eight characteristics there were the mind, then the mind would not be the eight characteristics, and the eight characteristics would not be the mind. If the mind were not the eight characteristics, then the mind would have only a name and no characteristics; a phenomenon devoid of characteristics is not called 'mind.' If the eight characteristics were apart from the mind, the eight characteristics would have nothing to shift, and thus could not be called 'the eight characteristics,' because the eight characteristics would have nothing to characterize. Examining and seeking it thoroughly in this way, the mind and the eight characteristics do not fundamentally exist of themselves, nor do they possess an intrinsic nature dependent upon another; their nature is like empty space, without any characteristic of oneness or difference. Therefore it is called great vitarka. Perceiving the preceding breath and form, one should also differentiate each in this same manner. This is a brief explanation of the characteristics of superior vitarka and great vitarka.
