Second, acquisition through cultivation. Seeing the phenomenal world through the five supernormal knowledges is as the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra states: 'A monk who practices the Dharma attains the first dhyāna. Having entered the dhyāna, desiring to obtain bodily supernormal knowledge, he focuses his mind on the tip of his nose, contemplates the incoming and outgoing breaths, deeply sees the breath entering and exiting ninety-nine thousand pores, and sees that the body is entirely empty, and likewise even up to the four great elements. Having contemplated thus, he departs from the characteristics of form and obtains bodily supernormal knowledge, and likewise even up to the fourth dhyāna. How does a monk who practices the Dharma obtain the supernormal knowledge of the divine eye? If there is a monk who attains the first dhyāna, contemplates the incoming and outgoing breath, and genuinely sees form; having seen form, he reflects thus: "Whatever forms of the three times I have seen, whenever I intend to see them, I immediately see them as I wish," and likewise even up to the fourth dhyāna. How does a monk who practices the Dharma obtain the supernormal knowledge of the divine ear? Kauṇḍinya! If there is a monk who attains the first dhyāna, contemplates the incoming and outgoing breath, and sequentially contemplates sounds, and likewise even up to the fourth dhyāna. How does a monk who practices the Dharma obtain the supernormal knowledge of knowing the minds of others? If there is a monk who contemplates the incoming and outgoing breath, and upon attaining the first dhyāna, cultivates śamatha and vipaśyanā, this is called the knowledge of others' minds, and likewise even up to the fourth dhyāna. How does a monk who practices the Dharma obtain the knowledge of past lives? Kauṇḍinya! If there is a monk who contemplates the incoming and outgoing breath, upon attaining the first dhyāna he immediately obtains the supernormal knowledge of the eye. Having obtained the supernormal knowledge of the eye, he contemplates the initial existence at the time of the kalala, and even up to the arising and ceasing of the five aggregates, and likewise even up to the fourth dhyāna.' Having obtained the five supernormal knowledges, he is immediately able to see the kinds of sentient beings and lands throughout the ten directions, three times, and nine destinies, noble and ordinary, each and every distinctive characteristic being different; this is called obtaining supernormal knowledges through cultivation, penetrating the phenomenal world without obstruction.
