First, spontaneous arising: When such a person enters the first dhyāna, deeply contemplating the three phenomenal aspects of the fundamental [world], they are immediately able to comprehend the characteristics of the conceptual world. When they awaken to conventional truth in terms of principles, their samādhi and wisdom become even deeper and sharper, and the supernormal knowledges spontaneously arise; further, they accomplish the eye composed of the pure derived matter of the four great elements of the form realm. With this mind-eye of pure form, they penetrate and see all forms throughout the ten directions, the phenomenal characteristics being distinct and clearly differentiated without confusion, which is called the supernormal knowledge of the divine eye. The remaining divine ear, telepathy, recollection of past lives, and bodily supernormal knowledges are also like this. Because they obtain the five supernormal knowledges, they clearly see the distinctions and differences among the spheres of form and mind across the ten directions and three times, where the kinds of sentient beings and the features of lands are each distinct; this is called seeing the phenomenal world in its differences. Therefore the sūtra says: 'Deeply cultivating dhyāna-concentration, one obtains the five supernormal knowledges.'
