Lower vitarka and great vitarka: Using the supernormal knowledge of the divine eye to penetrate and see forms in their distinctions—that the kinds of sentient beings are not one, that all the differences among lands are distinct, and that their names are also different—is therefore called vitarka. Great vitarka: Awakened to the fact that all worldly things are mere provisional designations, closely contemplating the four great elements, one then does not see differences or distinctions in the world, doing so clearly and distinctly, which is therefore called great vitarka. The remaining four supernormal knowledges are also like this.
