Second, the non-sequential path of destroying phenomena. From the initial generation of the mind, one completely cultivates the ten notions, severs all fetters, attains the fruit of arhatship, and is fully endowed with the two kinds of nirvāṇa. Thus the Mahāyāna [treatise] states: 'If at the stages of heat, summit, patience, and the highest mundane dharma, one contemplates with correct wisdom and departs from afflictions, this is the notion of dispassion; attaining the undefiled path and severing fetters, this is the notion of severance; upon entering nirvāṇa, extinguishing the five grasping aggregates so that they do not continue, this is called the notion of cessation.' One should know that from the initial stage of dry wisdom onward, the notion of dispassion and so forth are spoken of; this differs from what was said before, where the three notions were combined later in the path of the adept.
