Fourth, skillful wisdom is the weighing of the marks of gain and loss, light and heavy, between the pleasures of the desire realm and the bliss of the first dhyāna. We now make two interpretations back and forth: "weighing" is the name for deliberating and estimating using wisdom. As for "gain and loss": the pleasures of the desire realm are loss, and the bliss of the first dhyāna is gain. The bliss of the first dhyāna is without faults, and is therefore gain; the pleasures of the desire realm have faults, and are therefore called loss. It may also be said that the first dhyāna is loss and the pleasures of the desire realm are gain: because the pleasures of the desire realm are coarse, one reckons them to be real and gives rise to a strong sense of gain; the first dhyāna is loss because one perceives the body to be empty and tranquil and experiences subtle bliss that seems almost non-existent, so it cannot be fixedly grasped, losing the appearance of bliss, and is therefore called loss.
