Regarding "light and heavy": the desire realm is light, and the first dhyāna is heavy. The desire realm is light because the pleasure obtained in association with the five consciousnesses is rapid and shallow, hence light; the bliss obtained in the first dhyāna is heavy because it is associated with the mental consciousness and abides long, conditioning what is deep, hence heavy. "Heavy" means valuable, precious, and treasured. It may also be said that the desire realm is heavy and the first dhyāna is light: the pleasures of the desire realm occur alongside afflictions, and the burdens on the mind are heavy, hence called heavy; with the bliss of the first dhyāna, the burdens on the mind are few, hence called light. Next, there are masters who say that skillful wisdom means: when the practitioner first cultivates dhyāna, he skillfully recognizes the external and internal expedient means and employs them with skill, not losing their suitability and swiftly attaining dhyāna-concentration; hence it is called skillful wisdom.
