Third, obtaining a quiet and secluded dwelling: "Quiet" means not engaging in myriad affairs, hence called quiet. Being free from bustle and clamor, it is called "secluded." There are three places where one can cultivate dhyāna-concentration: First, deep mountains, places cut off from human beings. Second, an araṇya for dhūta practice, separated from villages by at least two li, where the sounds of herding cattle cease and there is no bustle or clamor. Third, far from the dwellings of white-robed laity, within a pure saṅghārāma. These are all quiet and secluded dwellings.
