Regarding the sufficiency of food provisions, food is of four kinds: First, for superior persons and Great Beings in deep mountains cut off from humanity, they obtain fruits and wild vegetables as available, merely to sustain life. Second, constantly practicing dhūta and adopting the practice of alms-gathering: this practice of alms-gathering can destroy the four kinds of wrong livelihood and rely on right livelihood to sustain oneself, which can give rise to the noble path; hence it is called the noble lineage. The four kinds of wrong livelihood are: 1. downward-facing mouth eating; 2. upward-facing mouth eating; 3. four-intermediate-directions-facing mouth eating; 4. cardinal-directions-facing mouth eating. These are the characteristics of wrong livelihood. As Śāriputra explained to the maiden Śyāmā, this should be extensively distinguished. Third, residing in an araṇya and receiving food delivered by a dānapati. Fourth, receiving purified food within the Saṅgha. Having food such as these is called the sufficiency of conditions; this is called the sufficiency of clothing and food. If one lacks these conditions to sustain the body, the mind will be unsettled, hindering the Path.
