Now we explain realizing the five wheels through stopping. The five wheels are: first, the earth-wheel; second, the water-wheel; third, the wind-wheel; fourth, the gold-sand wheel; fifth, the vajra-wheel. These five Dharma gates are all named by borrowing metaphors. They are generally named 'wheels' in the sense of turning: just as when a worldly wheel turns, it leaves here and reaches there, so too is the explanation of wheels in dhyāna. For instance, because the earth-wheel leaves the turbulent mind of the lower ground and turns to reach the upper ground, it is called a wheel. And so on up to the vajra-wheel, its meaning is also like this, because it turns to reach the ultimate fruit of the non-learner.
