1. As for the wholesome roots of the nine notions: within a calm, concentrated mind in the desire realm or the anāgamya stage, one suddenly sees corpses of other men and women bloated. At that time, the mind is startled into awakening; one laments one's past stupor and infatuation, feels disgust and revulsion toward the beloved five desires, and resolves never again to draw near them. Or one sees the signs of livid discoloration, blood smearing, pus-filled rot, scattered gnawed remains, broken and scattered white bones, and so forth. These are the signs of the arising of the wholesome roots of the nine notions.
