First, explaining the treatment for those with excessive external greed and desire: the arising of the disease comes from attachment to external objects—the complexion, demeanor, speech, deportment, smoothness, and other marks of men and women; therefore, the fire of lust blazes without ceasing. As for the method of counteraction, one should teach the practice of the contemplation of the nine notions: whether going to a charnel ground to take the marks of a corpse, or carefully contemplating an attractive object falling flat upon the ground, viewing the corpse bloated, rotting and decaying, pus and blood flowing forth, excrement and urine, and various worms feeding upon it. 'That which I now grasp is also like this; where is there anything to love?' Having made this contemplation, the lustful mind naturally subsides; therefore, the nine notions can cure the severe disease of lustful attachment to external objects.
