Second, explaining the method of establishing the settling of the mind according to counteractive fulfillment: for instance, when a practitioner originally has the unwholesome obstructive dharma of lustful desire, to counteract this illness they practice the contemplation of impurity; when the contemplation is accomplished, the illness is eliminated. At that time, although they have no illness of desire, they have not yet realized deep dharmas, so they should apply their mind further to cultivate impurity. Having completed various kinds of impurity, they should next remove the skin and flesh, cultivate the radiance of white bones, enter the eight liberations, sever the fetters of the three realms, and accomplish the path of the three vehicles; in this way their effort is not lost. If they were to settle the mind on other dharmas instead and apply effort anew, success in the matter would be difficult. Differentiating the method of settling the mind according to counteractive fulfillment for the remaining fourteen can be understood by analogy.
