Second, the māra of the aggregates, elements, and bases: because the five aggregates, twelve bases, and eighteen elements—all name-and-form—bind sentient beings, obscuring the practitioner's pure wholesome roots so that merit and wisdom cannot increase, they are called māras. The so-called aggregates and bases of the desire realm, and up to the aggregates and bases of the form and formless realms, are likewise so. If the practitioner's mind does not understand and grasps onto them, they are all called māras. If one can neither receive nor cling to them, contemplating them as like empty space, unhindered by their obscuration, one immediately destroys the deeds of Māra.
