From that time onwards, the Dharma masters of the Western lands transmitted this without interruption, mostly taking this method as the beginning of learning the path. If the great beings of the four reliances and the bodhisattvas of the six supernormal knowledges preached the Dharma to liberate people, this was their primary initiative; how could it not be the initial gate for entering the path? When transmitted to later generations, those who teach and preach the Dharma do not cultivate dhyāna themselves. Having no inner path of their own, as soon as they speak, they ruin other people's cultivation of samādhi. If one looks at Āryadeva's teaching, he regarded dhyāna-concentration as essential. The people of the world are inverted—truly lamentable!
