First, as for the marks of the manifestation of the first dhyāna: when the practitioner in anāgamya realizes the accomplishment of the sixteen sensations, this is the mark of the manifestation of the first dhyāna. How is it realized? If the practitioner in anāgamya enters concentration progressively deeper, body and mind empty and quiescent, not seeing internal or external, for one day, up to seven days, or one month, up to one year—if the concentration mind is not ruined, being protected and grown, within this concentration one suddenly perceives body and mind firmly cohesive, stirring with motion. When it moves, one again perceives gradually having a body, like clouds or shadows stirring and manifesting; it manifests either from above, or from below, or from the waist, gradually pervading the body. Manifesting from above mostly regresses; manifesting from below mostly progresses. When the movement-sensation manifests, its meritorious virtues are immeasurable.
