First, in explaining the names of the factors: the first dhyāna has five factors: 1. the factor of vitarka; 2. the factor of vicāra; 3. the factor of prīti; 4. the factor of sukha; 5. the factor of ekāgratā. Vitarka means the initial mind's apprehension, and is named vitarka. Vicāra means the subsequent subtle mind's discrimination, and is named vicāra. The mind of jubilation and delight is named prīti. The mind of tranquil ease is named sukha. Being quiet and undistracted is named ekāgratā. As for the reason why five factors are established: if set against the unwholesome, they destroy the five desires and the five hindrances; if set against wholesome dharmas, they correspond to practicing the five dharmas. Therefore the Treatise says: 'Leaving behind the five hindrances, practicing the five dharmas, and being endowed with the five factors, one enters the first dhyāna.'
