"The application of mindfulness to dharmas has five: (12) Contemplating impermanence: having already attained mastery and not being ruined by sinking or floating, one is able to contemplate that all phenomena are impermanent, arising and ceasing from thought to thought, not to be delighted in. (13) Contemplating dispersion and destruction: this body will soon be dispersed and destroyed; it is a phenomenon subject to attrition and eradication, not genuinely existent. (14) Contemplating detachment from desire: this body is purely the root of suffering; the mind desires to be detached from it, hence it is called 'detaching from desire.' (15) Contemplating cessation: dwelling in this mind ceases, as it has many faults and one does not wish to abide [in it]. (16) Contemplating relinquishment: contemplating that all these phenomena are faults, hence it is called 'relinquishing.'
