Third, entering the path according to one's capacity. If one cultivates any single notion among the ten notions and accomplishes it well, one can sever the fetters of the three realms, attain arhatship, and realize the two kinds of nirvāṇa. Thus the sūtra states: 'One who skillfully cultivates impermanence can sever all attachment to desire, attachment to form, and attachment to formlessness; restlessness, conceit, and ignorance—the fetters of the three realms—are extinguished forever without remainder.' One should know that impermanence is precisely the complete notion of non-affliction entering the path; the nine notions below should also have their aspects of proceeding toward the path distinguished one by one in like manner.
