Now we collectively explain the first: the three Dharma gates within the contemplation of decomposing dharmas. The reason these three Dharma gates are named the contemplation of decomposing dharmas is that the practitioner's mind loathes the six desires as if they were enemy bandits, and therefore cultivates the nine notions as a counteragent. When performing this contemplation, although one breaks down the six desires, much terror often arises; if one cultivates the eight correct recollections, terror is immediately eliminated. One's mind of covetous desire having grown thin, one is also without fear. At that time, wishing to sever the fetters of the triple realm, one should immediately advance to cultivating the ten notions. When the ten notions are perfected, one promptly slays the bandits of the fetters and becomes an arhat. Because this person has decomposed and destroyed the physical marks of the desire realm, and is unable to fully complete the triple-realm contemplation, refinement, permeation, cultivation, three knowledges, and eight liberations, it is called decomposing dharmas.
