Troubled by counting as coarse, the intention no longer wishes to count. At that time, the practitioner should let go of counting and cultivate following. Following also has two kinds: first, cultivating following; second, realizing following. Cultivating following: one relinquishes the previous practice of counting and single-mindedly relies on following the ingress and egress of the breath, collecting the mind to focus on the breath, knowing the breath entering and exiting, the mind abiding on the breath as its object without any thought of dispersal; this is called cultivating following. Realizing following: the mind having become subtle, tranquil and undistracted, one perceives the length of the breath, entering and exiting throughout the entire body; the mind and breath spontaneously rely on each other, and conscious thoughts are serene and concentratedly still.
