Perceiving following as coarse, the mind grows weary and wishes to relinquish it, like a person who is utterly exhausted and wishes to sleep, taking no pleasure in multiple tasks. At that time, the practitioner should relinquish following and cultivate cessation. Cessation also has two kinds: first, cultivating cessation; second, realizing cessation. Cultivating cessation: one brings all objective thoughts to rest, neither thinking of counting nor following, and makes the mind concentrated and still; this is called cultivating cessation. Realizing cessation: one perceives body and mind quietly dissolving and entering absorption, not seeing internal or external characteristics; the dharma of absorption holds the mind, spontaneously unmoving.
