Furthermore, the bodhisattva comprehends that breath has no intrinsic nature. At that time, they do not even see that there is breath, how much less within the path of breath do they see the six coverings and the dharmas of the six perfections! Although within the nature of breath they do not see the six coverings and the dharmas of the six perfections, they also clearly penetrate the six coverings and the six perfections. Why is this? When the practitioner counts the breath, they know for themselves that if one sees breath within that which is non-breath, this inevitably accomplishes the covering dharma of stinginess and greed. There are four kinds of stinginess: first, stinginess regarding wealth and material things, because seeing a self within the breath, one generates stinginess for the sake of the self; second, stinginess regarding the body, because one gives rise to the view of self regarding the breath; third, stinginess regarding life, because failing to understand within the breath, one conceives that there is a life-principle; fourth, stinginess regarding dharmas, because failing to understand within the breath, one gives rise to views and a mind clinging to dharmas is born.
