Next is the explanation of the "Eighth: The Six Wondrous Gates of Contemplating the Mind." As for the six wondrous gates of contemplating the mind: this is for practitioners of great faculties who skillfully recognize the essential points of the Dharma; not relying on stages, they directly illuminate the source of all dharmas from afar. What is the source of all dharmas? It is the mind of sentient beings. All the myriad dharmas arise from the mind; if one can reflectively contemplate the nature of the mind and find the source of the mind to be unapprehendable, one knows that the myriad dharmas are all without root. Explaining the six wondrous gates with reference to this contemplation of the mind is not like what came before. Why is this? When the practitioner first learns to contemplate the mind, they know that all the quantitative dharmas, both mundane and supramundane, all issue from the mind, and apart from the mind there is not a single dharma; thus, counting all dharmas is done entirely with reference to the mind. Know that the mind is itself the gate of counting.
