This is a brief explanation of how, within the counting of breaths, the dhyāna marks of the six gates reciprocally arise, unfixed in sequence and not necessarily entirely as described now. As for the remaining gates of following, cessation, contemplation, turning back, and purification, their reciprocal realization of the marks of each dhyāna is also like this. As for why there is this reciprocal realization of the various dhyānas, the reasons are of two kinds: First, because when cultivating the various dhyānas they are cultivated reciprocally, their arising also follows reciprocally, the meaning being like the previous characteristics of cultivating the six wondrous gates in four ways. Second, because wholesome roots from the karmic conditions of past lives arise, they arise reciprocally and without fixity, the meaning being as explained at length in "Examining the Wholesome and Unwholesome Roots of Nature" among the internal expedients for seated meditation.
