The verse says:
"The various paths each have their methods,
Yet they do not investigate them themselves;
Suddenly peeping into the Śākya teachings,
Over a period of ten or more years.
Not only is their own method clumsy,
They must have a mind conspiring to destroy it.
This is Kapila;
How could the ṛṣis and sages permit it?
For these reasons,
One must compose the Treatise on Contemplating the Mind."
These two and a half verses clarify the gains and losses of non-Buddhists. Now, when non-Buddhists peep into the Śākya teachings, it amounts to no more than two motives: first, they disdain their own clumsy methods; second, they conspire to destroy the Buddha-Dharma. Peeping to seek faults is not an inquiry into the Buddhist teaching with a good heart. Long ago, a non-Buddhist refuted and defeated all dharma masters, but could do nothing against a single dhyāna master. His mother advised him, saying: "If you debate with the dhyāna master, revile him by saying, 'Head of a donkey, head of a horse, heads of all beasts!' and you will gain victory." The non-Buddhist then followed his mother's plan and attained victory; later he received the body of Kapila, with a thousand heads on a single body. Since he harbored an evil mind, how could the unseen holy ones permit it? The matter is as the verse explains.
