The verse says:
"To be wealthy and noble without the Way
Mostly increases arrogance and indolence.
If one can interrogate contemplation of mind,
One attains the wealth and nobility of the true Dharma.
Though high, one is not in danger;
Though full, one does not overflow.
Not attached to worldly wealth and nobility,
The mind constantly abides in the Dharma of the Way.
For these reasons,
One must compose the Treatise on Contemplating the Mind."
These two and a half verses clarify the gains and losses of wealth and nobility. Why is this? Wealth and nobility do not [intentionally] confer arrogance and extravagance, yet arrogance and extravagance arrive naturally. Thus the verse says: "To be wealthy and noble without the Way / Mostly increases arrogance and indolence." If one can interrogate contemplation of mind and contemplate the realm of true mark, that realm gives rise to wondrous wisdom, which is nobility of lineage. And the realm and wisdom of true mark are fully endowed with the wealth of the seven noble ones, and even fully endowed with the myriad virtues and myriad practices, which is called wealth. The Lotus Sūtra says: "There was a great elder whose household was exceedingly wealthy," which is just this meaning. For one who attains this Way of wealth and nobility, holding it in one's bosom and letting it flow through one's person, it is as the verse says: "Though high, one is not in danger; / Though full, one does not overflow. / Not attached to worldly wealth and nobility, / The mind constantly abides in the Dharma of the Way."
