The verse states: 'I bow my head to the Buddhas of the ten directions: / with deep benevolence toward mind-contemplators, / exhort them to observe carefully with goodness, / and give rise to the wondrous bliss of correct awakening.' This single stanza is an entreaty taking refuge in the Buddha. Now, the Three Jewels are all fully endowed with the four immeasurables; yet benevolence is able to bestow joy, and the Buddha's benevolence is the weightiest; therefore, he entreats him to bestow joy. The verse states: 'I bow my head to the Dharma of the ten directions: / with deep compassion toward mind-contemplators, / exhort them to observe carefully with goodness, / to attain the true Dharma and escape suffering.' Now, compassion is able to eradicate suffering, and the Dharma jewel is the true, wondrous medicine whose substance is capable of rescuing from suffering; therefore, he entreats the Dharma, with deep compassion toward mind-contemplators, to free them from suffering. The verse states: 'I bow my head to the Saṅgha of the ten directions: / if they are able to observe well, / they will enter the great ocean of harmony, / with immeasurable rejoicing in their minds.' Now, the name 'Saṅgha' means harmony, which is the meaning of sympathetic joy without discordance; therefore, joy is discussed in reference to the Saṅgha. The verse states: 'I bow my head to Master Nāgārjuna: / may you empower mind-contemplators / to quickly attain liberation, / and also empower them to let go of the three minds.' Now, Nāgārjuna arose precisely to shatter graspings and eliminate views; therefore, he entreats Nāgārjuna to grant the letting go of the three minds of benevolence, compassion, and sympathetic joy, as well as attachments to views and affection. Furthermore, since the lineage is rooted in Nāgārjuna, he entreats his empowerment.
