一、不殺生戒。云何名殺生？若實知是眾生，發心欲殺而奪其命，起身業有作已，是名殺罪。若不作是事，名不殺戒。其餘繫閉、鞭打等，是殺方便，非正罪。

First, the precept against killing living beings. What is meant by killing living beings? If one truly knows it to be a living being, generates the intention to kill, deprives it of life, and having set bodily karma in motion an act is accomplished—this is named the offense of killing. If one does not do this, it is named the precept against killing. The rest—such as binding, confining, whipping, and beating—are preliminary expedients of killing, not the primary offense.
