外六入者，此六法疎故屬外，識所遊涉，故名為入。亦名塵者，塵以染污為義，以能染污情識，故通名為塵也。
The six external āyatanas: these six dharmas, being remote, belong to the external; they are that which consciousness traverses, and hence are named āyatanas. They are also named "dusts" (chen) because dust has the meaning of defilement; because they can defile emotional consciousness, they are universally named dusts.
