初禪次第定。離諸欲惡不善法，有覺有觀，離生喜樂。入初禪定時，是中初禪定觀均齊，自識其心。其心次第而入，無有剎那雜念間入初禪定，是為初禪次第定。

The sequential meditative attainment of the first dhyāna. Being free from desires and evil, unwholesome phenomena, with vitarka and vicāra, and with joy and bliss born of detachment, when one enters the attainment of the first dhyāna, concentration and contemplation in this first dhyāna are equal and balanced, and one recognizes one's own mind. The mind enters sequentially, without even an instant of mixed thoughts intervening in entering the attainment of the first dhyāna. This is the sequential meditative attainment of the first dhyāna.
