Sixth, the mind-consciousness dhātu. After the five consciousnesses arise, they immediately perish; the mind becomes the mental consciousness, and this mental consciousness arises in succession. When the mental consciousness arises, it immediately cognizes the mental-object dust. If the five consciousnesses can produce the mental consciousness, then the former five consciousnesses serve as the faculty, and the subsequent mental consciousness is the mental consciousness. When this mental consciousness perishes, the next consciousness arises in succession; thus the former mental consciousness produces the subsequent mental consciousness. In this way, they also continuously transfer and receive the names of faculty and consciousness, in all cases taking that which is able to produce as the faculty and that which is produced as the consciousness. Here, we speak of the produced consciousness as the mind-consciousness dhātu.
