Second is the emptiness of dharmas. When contemplating the painful fruits of birth and death, not only are the sixteen views and notions such as self, person, and sentient being empty and unattainable like turtle hair and rabbit horns, but within this, when the distinct dharmas of name-and-form, skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus are individually distinguished, analyzed, broken down, and closely examined part by part down to subtle atoms and ksanas, they are all completely empty and nonexistent. This is called the emptiness of dharmas, which is the characteristic of the emptiness of dharmas explained in the scriptures of the śrāvakas. If the emptiness of dharmas is explained in the Mahāyāna, all dharmas are like dreams and illusions, fundamentally empty of themselves, not empty by virtue of being analyzed and broken down.
