Third, to put at ease those who are not at ease. This universal vow arises with the truth of the path as its condition; hence the Yingluo jing says: "Those who are not at ease in the truth of the path are caused to be at ease in the truth of the path." Now, explaining this, it is precisely the primary and auxiliary paths that lead to nirvāṇa. There are two kinds of primary and auxiliary paths: first, cultivating primary and auxiliary paths by focusing exclusively on the truth of emptiness; this path only leads to the small vehicle's nirvāṇa of exhausting suffering. Second, cultivating primary and auxiliary paths by directly taking the real mark of the middle path as condition; this path is able to reach the great vehicle's great parinirvāṇa. If there are any who are not at ease in these two kinds of paths, the bodhisattva resolves and vows to cause them to be at ease; hence it is said, "to put at ease those who are not at ease in the path."
