First, using an analogy to show that function is not [merely] accomplished through effort: therefore one knows that the mind-mirror is fundamentally bright and the images of the three thousand are fundamentally possessed. That they cannot yet appear before creatures is covered by the dust of the three delusions. Although clearing the dust is the efficacy of the conditioning and revealing [causes], the manifestation of images derives entirely from inherent possession in the nature. Here it directly clarifies that contemplating the mind activates function. Others say that the appearance of images derives from capacities—their meaning is separated by heaven and earth. The essential purport of the contemplation method is not only here; all gates are like this, but it is convenient to explain it here.
