Third, from "therefore know" onward, clarifying that ground and rain are without distinction and the benefit is equal. The four subtleties in terms of metaphor are what is produced by the single ground; the expedient and the real in terms of dharma are what is moistened by the single rain. The three thousand of the ordinary ground are without separation, entirely perfect along with a single thought-moment; since the three thousand of the Buddha ground are fused, they are fully possessed along with a single response. How much more so when sentient beings stimulate the Buddha within their minds, and the Buddha responds to the sentient beings within his mind! Since the essences of stimulus and response are still identical, what difference is there in the benefit of expedient and real? Therefore it says: only converting bodhisattvas, not for the two vehicles; those who hear the Dharma, not one fails to become a Buddha. Only then is it called the nonduality of receiving moisture.
