Answer: "Although they cling to an older edition, it contradicts the present text. Why is this? The text says: 'Could one, because phenomena do not displace the mind, make deluded cultivation become understanding?' The meaning of the text solely rebukes clinging to delusion as understanding; when did it ever jointly rebuke delusion and understanding as understanding? Is this not blatantly contradicting the text? Therefore we know that the dual elimination of delusion and understanding owes its efficacy to understanding-cultivation. Why is this? Since delusion turns its back on nature, understanding-cultivation is established to overturn it, whereby for a period phenomena are distinct. Since understanding accords with principle, and principle has neither opposition nor accord, both minds are naturally eliminated. Hence we know that using this character 'period' (qi 期) neither contradicts the text and accords with principle. If one uses the characters 'this' and 'its' (ci/qi), there are rather many contradictions, which cannot be refuted at length."
