Tenth, as for the Buddha stage, the power of great merit aids wisdom: with a single thought-moment of corresponding wisdom contemplating true truth, habit-energies are completely and exhaustively extinguished. Therefore the Dà zhìdù lùn says: 'The wisdom-power of śrāvakas is weak, like a small fire burning wood: although it catches fire, charcoal still remains. The wisdom-power of pratyekabuddhas is superior, like a great fire burning wood: the wood burns and the charcoal is consumed, yet ashes remain. The wisdom-power of the Buddhas is immense, like the great fire that burns the kalpa: ashes and charcoal are both utterly consumed.' It is also like the simile of the three animals—the rabbit, the horse, and the elephant—crossing the river. Question: The names of the Bodhisattva and Buddha stages are distinct; how can they be said to be shared with the two vehicles? Answer: Although the names differ, both are equally non-learners worthy of offerings who attain the two nirvāṇas, together returning to ash-and-extinction; their attested fruition is one, and name and meaning are not distinct. Thus name and meaning are ultimately entirely identical.
