Next, the joyful samādhi which shatters the existence of asuras: asuras have much anger and fury, having the fear of evil karma, the fear of views and thoughts, the fear of dust and sand, and the fear of ignorance. In order to shatter these various fears, the bodhisattva upholds precepts and vigor, cultivating the various practices: unbroken joy shatters the fear of evil karma; cultivating the joy of dhyāna bliss subdues the fear of views and thoughts; cultivating wisdoms such as of arising and ceasing and non-arising and ceasing, they attain the joy of awakening joy and shatter the fear of views and thoughts; cultivating the joy of reflecting in a mirror and the immeasurable wisdom, they shatter the fear of dust and sand; cultivating the wisdom of non-action, they shatter the fear of ignorance. Because views and thoughts are shattered, the true emptiness joy samādhi is completed; because evil karma and dust and sand are shattered, the samādhi of joyful sight by all sentient beings is completed; because ignorance is shattered, the joy king samādhi is completed. Attaining such joyful samādhis of the three truths through the power of personal cultivation, and perfuming the existence of asuras through the power of compassion within all practices, they take birth among them, subduing them with gentle words and preaching the Dharma for them to shatter the existence of asuras and cause them to attain fearlessness. Being personally free from the three fears and personally realizing the three joys, they cause others to be free from fear and cause others to attain joy; therefore this samādhi is called the 'joyful samādhi'.
