Second, elucidating the stages of the four applications of mindfulness considered separately: there are three different kinds of faculties and dispositions. If one has the disposition for liberation through wisdom, in the four applications of mindfulness considered separately, one cultivates only the contemplation of mindfulness of dharmic nature. If one has the disposition for liberation both ways, one cultivates mindfulness of dharmic nature and also cultivates shared mindfulness. If one has the disposition for unimpeded liberation, one cultivates all three kinds of mindfulness together, perfecting mindfulness considered separately. If one is able to produce the four kinds of diligence within mindfulness considered separately, they are named the four correct exertions. Cultivating the four kinds of concentrations, they are named the four bases of psychic power. When the five kinds of wholesome dharmas arise, they are named faculties. When the wholesome dharmas increase and obstruct all afflictions, they are named powers. Distinguishing the functions of the path is named the seven factors of awakening. Progressing steadily within the path is named the eightfold noble path. If one enters the eightfold noble path, one is then able to contemplate the four truths and perfect the four applications of mindfulness considered separately.
