The explanation of external ordinary beings is itself divided into three: First, the five methods for stilling the mind: (1) for beings with much greed, contemplation of impurity; (2) for beings with much anger, contemplation of compassion; (3) for beings with much distraction, contemplation of counting the breath; (4) for ignorant beings, contemplation of conditioned arising; (5) for beings with many obstacles, contemplation of the Buddha. Second, the foundations of mindfulness with specific marks (the four foundations of mindfulness explained above). Third, the foundations of mindfulness with general marks: contemplating the body as impure, and feelings, mind, and dharmas as likewise impure, up to contemplating dharmas as without self, and body, feelings, and mind as likewise without self, the intermediate cases being understood accordingly. (These three categories above are called external ordinary beings, and are also called the stage of provisioning).
