Next, the noble ranks are explained, which are also divided into three: (1) the path of seeing (the first fruit), (2) the path of cultivation (the second and third fruits), and (3) the path of no-learning (the fourth fruit). First, the srotāpanna, which is translated as 'stream-enterer'; at this rank one severs the delusion of views of the eighty-eight proclivities in the three realms, and because one sees the ultimate truth, it is called the path of seeing, and is also called the noble rank. Second, the sakṛdāgāmin, which is translated as 'once-returner'; among the nine grades of thought delusion of the desire realm, one severs the first six grades completely, while the last three grades still remain; therefore one returns once more. Third, the anāgāmin, which is translated as 'non-returner'; at this rank one severs the remaining thought delusion of the desire realm completely, and advances to sever the thought delusion of the upper eight stages. Fourth, the arhat, which is translated as 'one of no-learning', also as 'unborn', also as 'slayer of the thieves', and also as 'worthy of offerings'; at this rank one severs views and thought completely; the bond of causes has already been severed, but the bond of retribution still remains; this is called nirvāṇa with remainder. If one turns the body to ash and extinguishes consciousness, it is called nirvāṇa without remainder, and is also called solitary and independent liberation. This concludes the brief explanation of the ranks of the śrāvaka.
