Zhizhe's Way transmits the threefold contemplation, preserved in the writings of his own house; while his virtuous transformation extended across two dynasties, recorded by Zhang'an in the various records of the Hundred Records. Looking at it: in the beginning, he established regulatory codes to discipline the internal assembly; in the middle, he drafted letters and memorials to move kings and ministers; at the end, he discussed the release of living beings to bring peace to the varieties of crawling insects. How luminous and vast was his transformation, bright as the sun and stars—this is what is meant by 'illuminating and dwelling in all under heaven'! Zhang'an's preface says: 'It is bequeathed to show descendants, that they may know that abundant virtue lies herein.' This is truly worthy of belief. Although the carved printing blocks had already been printed and circulated, they had not undergone collation. Therefore, I compared and verified them against an ancient copy; moreover, the errors were not few, so I corrected and verified more than ten places from beginning to end, hoping that when perusing it there would be no obstruction to his intention, and that those who see this inscription may distinguish the erroneous from the correct. Inscribed by Śramaṇa Jingfan, transmitter of the Tiantai ancestral teachings at the Wuliangshou Cloister of Beichan in Suzhou.
