Our ancestor, the Great Dhyāna Master Zhizhe, was truly a person who came again from Gṛdhrakūṭa. The Way he transmitted, the threefold contemplation, was awakened from the one mind; he broadened the correct lineage of Nāgārjuna, and profoundly extolled the esoteric canon of the Lotus. He divided and explained it through the five periods and eight teachings, and brought it to its ultimate aim through the threefold contemplation and ten vehicles. Freely eloquent in proclamation, he did not establish written words; Zhang'an compiled them, leaving them to tarry for future conditions. As for those who understood, practiced, and verified entry, I do not know how many tens of millions they were. The carved blocks of his various works are distributed in all directions; only the Guoqing bailu was destroyed yesterday by Māra's fire, lasting until now over deep and accumulated years, without being completed or accomplished. Now, the practitioner Tancen was ordered to seek widely among monastics and laypeople, not shrinking from bitter toil; his sincere mind was not in vain, and he finally made the work whole, hoping that it may broaden what is seen and heard, and be transmitted to eternity. Thus one can know that our ancestor's Way was vast and his renown weighty, and that his transformative traces among sovereigns and ministers were consistent from beginning to end. Having witnessed this, I have fully observed the rites and most reverently perused the beginning and end; so it is said. At the time of the retreat-settling day in the yisi year, the twelfth year of the Chunxi era of the holy Song. Reverently inscribed by Jieying, residing on the mountain at Bailian.
